Thermal Properties

Dry Heat

For short periods, Formica® decorative laminates will withstand surface temperatures of up to 180°C (356°F) without deterioration of surface or colour (although in some cases a slight loss of sheen may occur). But avoid continuous localised heat.

Cooking vessels in normal use can achieve much higher temperatures: for example, the base of a pan containing cooking fat can exceed 250°C. So do not place hot pans etc directly on to laminate-faced work surfaces.

When used in situations of localised heat, such as adjacent to ovens, the maximum temperature to which the laminate should be subjected for long periods (up to 8 hours) is 100°C.

In some applications, such as use in fire surrounds, laminates are subjected to direct heat more or less continuously. In such cases, do not allow the surface temperature to exceed 60°C. Use heat resistant adhesives to prevent the laminate lifting from the substrate. In addition, consider design details carefully to avoid panel distortion and cracking from the internal corners of cut-outs.

Resistance to Cigarette Burns

Formica decorative laminates have a good resistance to damage by lighted cigarettes, and will normally only suffer a loss of sheen and/or slight to moderate brown staining. Excessive localised heating can result in blistering of the laminate surface, so it is wise to avoid direct contact with burning cigarettes or cigars.

Resistance to Boiling Water

Being resistant to steam and boiling water, Formica decorative laminates are ideal for applications where cleanliness and hygiene are important.

Cold

Formica decorative laminates are unaffected by extreme dry cold and cold storage conditions.
