Formica Limited, the UK market leader and only UK manufacturer of high pressure laminate, is delighted to announce the winners of the 2006 Formica Design a Laminate Competition. The winning and shortlisted designs are now on display at www.designalaminate.com.
Offering a chance to be part of an interior design classic, this open competition has for the third year taken the design world by storm. The competition received over 1500 entries this year.
The winning designs will be available to buy through the Formica® Digital service and the designers will receive a royalty on any sales. In addition, the overall winner received an Apple PowerMac G5 and the category winners each collected an Apple iPod MP3 player.
The competition was judged by architect, ex-president of RIBA and TV/Radio personality Maxwell Hutchinson, Vicky Richardson Editor of Blueprint Magazine and Eva Hoernisch European Design Markets Manager for Formica Limited. The winning entrants are listed below along with the judges comments.
Overall Winner – Tamsin Mae, Freelance Designer
“This design really captured the contemporary fragmented ‘shards of glass’ feel that is currently key across many different design sectors, especially architecture. Also, the contrast between the colours and the design style used cleverly creates a juxtaposing relationship between the natural and the high tech, which complements yet jarrs simultaneously.”
Contemporary Winner – Samuel Wingate, Wallpaper Designer
“Offering an interesting 3D effect that also seems to reflect light, this design works on many levels; as a pattern from afar and with interesting building detail up close.”
Retro Winner – Peter Scholey, Photographer / Illustrator
“With its Bauhaus and Annie Albers feel we particularly liked the intelligent use of layering which gave the basic repeated element a fresh look with added depth. This design has a classic yet chic feel.”
Street Culture Winner – Kim Culpan, Student, Bishop Burton College
“We were particularly drawn to the sense of movement this design portrayed, recreating the feel of a city on a rainy day with its chalky yet slightly blurry colours.”
Organic Winner – Lee Jay Robertson, Student, The Arts Institute
“Creating a sense of fragility, this design also has that fragmented quality. We particularly liked how it is suggestive of different natural elements while not clearly being definable as one in particular.”
In addition, the Formica Design a Laminate Book 2006 is also now available, showcasing the 20 shortlisted and the 80 best entries to the competition. Readers can register at www.designalaminate.com to receive a copy or can call 0191 259 3478.
